BARCELONA AND LYON SECURE EARLY QUARTER-FINAL BERTHS IN UEFA WOMEN’S CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Barcelona and Lyon have both booked their places in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Women’s Champions League, ensuring their progression with two group stage matches still to be played. Barcelona showcased their dominance in a commanding 7-0 victory over Rosengard, with Keira Walsh contributing to the goalscorers’ list. However, Lyon experienced a setback as they let slip a two-goal advantage against Brann. In another match, Eintracht Frankfurt’s hopes were dashed when they missed a penalty in stoppage time, resulting in a 1-1 draw against Benfica. Despite these varied outcomes, Barcelona and Lyon have successfully secured their spots in the quarter-finals, solidifying their stature as formidable contenders in the tournament.

Barcelona delivered a commanding performance, emerging as resounding 7-0 victors over Rosengard. Meanwhile, Lyon settled for a 2-2 draw against Brann after relinquishing a two-goal lead. In Barcelona’s triumph, Keira Walsh opened the scoring in the 15th minute with a deflected low shot, while Caroline Graham Hansen extended their advantage before halftime with a well-executed one-two with Aitana Bonmati. These impressive displays from both teams have solidified their places among the tournament’s top contenders as they progress to the quarter-finals with matches to spare.

Salma Paralluelo’s quick-fire brace extended Barcelona’s lead to 4-0 in the second half, drawing her level with Chelsea’s Sam Kerr as the top scorer of the competition with five goals. Claudia Pina capitalized on the visitors’ failure to clear a Lucy Bronze cross, adding a fifth goal, while Marta Torrejob converted with the assistance of England international Bronze to make it six. Teenager Martina Fernandez concluded the scoring for Barcelona. This victory widened Barcelona’s lead in Group A to five points.
Despite surrendering a two-goal advantage, Lyon secured advancement with a 2-2 draw against Brann. Amel Majri’s opener and Ada Hegerberg’s penalty gave Lyon a 2-0 lead within 13 minutes, but Justine Kielland reduced the deficit for the hosts before halftime. With Lindsey Horan’s dismissal, Lyon played with ten players, and Brann capitalized on their numerical advantage with Signe Gaupset’s equalizer in the 94th minute. Nevertheless, the single point was sufficient for Lyon to secure a top-two position in Group B. Brann remained in second place, six points ahead of St Polten, whose match against Slavia Prague was postponed due to a shooting incident in the Czech capital.
In Germany, there was late drama as Lena Pauels saved a stoppage-time penalty, securing Benfica a crucial point in a 1-1 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt. Despite Frankfurt’s numerous opportunities and their apparent likelihood of scoring a well-deserved winning goal, Laura Freigang’s spot kick was denied by Pauels in the fourth minute of added time. Prior to the penalty, Nycole Raysla had equalized for Benfica in the 71st minute, erasing Geraldine Reuteler’s first-half opener. This draw places Benfica in control of their fate, maintaining their second position in Group A, three points ahead of Frankfurt in third.
